Choose basic specification kitchen appliances from quality established brands

Many people still believe that the most expensive models in a range offer the highest build quality. This isn’t the case. There’s usually no difference in build quality between the cheapest & most expensive models in a range. The difference in price is purely down to features. If you’re on a tight budget, I always recommend buying the least expensive, basic specification models, from quality established brands like Bosch, Neff, AEG, Electrolux & Whirlpool.

Choose AEG kitchen appliances

In my personal opinion, AEG offer the best value kitchen appliances on the market. I base this on the following:
  • They cost around 10% less than Bosch & Neff appliances, despite being comparable in quality.
  • They usually come with a FREE 5 year parts & labour guarantee when purchased from a kitchen showroom.
  • They offer some unique appliances that aren’t available from Bosch & Neff. An example being their ultra flat gas hobs pictured below.

Choose a double oven instead of a single oven & 45cm microwave

If you cook regularly & are considering buying a single oven & separate 45cm microwave, why not choose a double oven instead? A double oven will usually cost up to 50% less than buying a single oven & separate 45cm microwave. However, it’s important to realise that a double oven will never offer the cooking capacity & flexibility that a single oven & separate 45cm microwave can.

Go for an unbranded hood

Kitchen hoods are probably the most reliable type of kitchen appliance, irrespective of their brand. Therefore, if budget is an issue, I usually recommend buying an unbranded rather than branded hood. The unbranded 90cm curved glass hood pictured below costs just £125. An equivalent branded hood costs £300 – £450.

Never buy budget brand ‘wet’ kitchen appliances

The kitchen appliances most likely to suffer breakdowns are the ones that use water, ie. washing machines, washer dryers & dishwashers. This is why I always recommend buying these from the best quality brands possible. A Neff, Bosch or AEG dishwasher/washing machine may cost £100 more than a budget brand equivalent, but it’s far less likely to break down after 2 or 3 years & require costly repairs.
If your budget can stretch, the best value brand for wet appliances is Miele. Although they cost twice as much as Bosch, Neff & AEG, they’re likely to last at least 3 times longer. In fact, Miele appliances are engineered to last a minimum of 20 years.
