5 Small Electric Appliances Every Kitchen Should Have

Find latest Walmart Coupons 20 OFF any purchases with Walmart promo codes August 2016. Save up to 20 OFF any purchase w Walmart coupon codes now. Up to 20% OFF on Clothing at Walmart with FREE Shipping included for orders of $35 or more! Choose hot items of  Holiday

I know what you're thinking: Is it really possible to say there's any one small appliance (let alone five!) that every kitchen should have? Kitchens, after all, come in all shapes and sizes. A studio apartment kitchen doesn't have the luxury of space that a suburban kitchen has, so telling me I have to have something in my kitchen (or else!) will probably just bum me out.
So perhaps this is a better way to say it: If you can only fit five small electric appliances in your kitchen, choose these five. Whether you're clearing out a cluttered kitchen or setting up a kitchen from scratch, they're endlessly useful and worth the money and space.

5 Small Appliances Every Kitchen Should Have

Because I can't completely ignore issues of kitchen size and budget in these recommendations, I hedged a bit and offered two options to meet the same need. For example, a food processor is an essential tool, at any size. If you can only afford or have space for a small one- or three-cup version, that totally works. (And may even be preferable depending on what you plan to use it for.)

1. A food processor.

This is the one tool that can do so many things in the kitchen. A larger 12-cup or morecapacity is really handy if you have a family to feed, or you like to double or triple whatever recipe you're working on. But don't discount how much you can do with a mini-prep food processor! For years I only had a three-cup food processor, and I worked that thing into the ground. (Anne felt the same way.)

2. A blender.

A blender of some kind is an incredibly useful tool to have in the kitchen. But there's a great debate over whether you need a countertop blender, or if you can get by with an immersion blender. (Kristin only uses an immersion blender, for example, while Christine switched back to her countertop blender.)
If you go the countertop route, it's probably worth it to upgrade to a high-end model for the sheer power and versatility. But if you're low on space and need a reliable, multi-functioning tool that'll whip or purée with ease, an immersion blender is the way to go.

3. An electric mixer.

There are two options for an electric mixer: a stand mixer or a hand mixer. If you bake a lot, you should probably get a stand mixer. It's the number-one recommended kitchen splurge for avid bakers, according to our readers. In short, it will make your life easier.
If you're not a big baker, most home cooks do fine with just a hand mixer for the occasional mixing task — beating egg whites, making whipped cream, or getting a smooth cake batter.

4. A pressure cooker.

Say what? Yes. We have fully converted to the cult of the pressure cooker, so much so that we think it deserves a spot in every kitchen. It beats out the slow cooker in our view, especially if you're tight on space. Then again, if you want the best of both worlds, get the Instant Pot! It totally lives up to the hype.

5. An electric kettle.

An electric kettle is one of those deceptively essential small appliances; you don't think it's necessary until you have one, and then you realize you use it all the time, possibly more than any other single small appliance in your kitchen. It's more energy-efficient than boiling water on the stove, and 10 times as fast. If you drink a fair amount of coffee or tea, it's a game-changer. As Faith so aptly put it, "an electric kettle is a wonderful thing."

Why It's Worth It

Choosing the Right Fan to Cool Your Home

Using fans to cool your home is energy efficient. After you determine the natural ventilation scheme in your home, you can enhance the effect with the use of active fans. When choosing fans, check for efficiency ratings.
Fans are rated by how much air they can move in a given amount of time. The most common spec is cubic feet per minute (cfm). Calculate how many cubic feet are in your house, room, or attic (length x width x height) to find the proper-size fan.
Fans move air most efficiently when they have a cowling. Cowlings prevent air around the tip of the blades from circling about outside the blades, instead forcing that air forward, yielding much more air for the same power draw.
A cowling on a fan directs airflow and improves efficiency.

Many fans are available at a wide range of prices. Choosing the right unit for your needs can ensure you get the effect you're looking for.

  • Oscillating fans: These fans move back and forth and work only for convective cooling, and they're dubious at that.
  • Box fans: Box fans are portable units you can move around as the need occurs. Most have some kind of cowling. Blade design helps determine the efficiency of the air flow.
  • Window fans: Window fans come with a sheet metal mounting that fits right into an open window and seals around the edges. Most of these fans are very efficient. The best way to move air in your house is by using a good window fan mounted into the most appropriate window, probably upstairs on the downwind side of your house (the fan aims out the window). One small window fan mounted properly can do the same work as a number of large fans scattered about the house.
  • Exhaust fans: Exhaust fans shouldn't be used when the HVAC system is running, but if you need to, open a small window nearby so that you can control the air movement.
If you're cooking in the summer when the AC is on, exhaust fans can make a big impact on the comfort in your house. This is true especially if you're boiling liquid, because not only does that heat the air, but it also humidifies. Run the fan on high, but crack a nearby window so that you don't pull expensive, cooled air out of your house.
  • Ceiling fans: Here's how to use your ceiling fan to get the most benefit:
    • Create convective cooling: With a ceiling fan, you can get convective cooling by running the fan in either direction.
Ceiling fans work best when the fan blades are 7 to 9 feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches belo
Ceiling fans work best when the fan blades are 7 to 9 feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling.
    • Draw the heat up: If you have a vent, you can enhance the chimney effect by running a ceiling fan in the reverse direction (aiming the air flow upward, in other words).
    • Reverse the chimney effect by pushing hot air down: In the winter, you can use a ceiling fan to push hot air back down into the room.
A well-positioned ceiling fan can allow you to lower your thermostat by 4 degrees Fahrenheit and achieve the same comfort level.
  • Whole house fans: Whole house fans are mounted in the ceiling between a high point in your house and the attic. They draw air through open windows, exhaust it up through the attic space, and cool the attic space
A great advantage is that you can open any window in the house and get air movement in that room.
  • Attic vent fans: An attic vent fan draws air in from one part of the attic, and out another. There is no air movement in the house below, so attic vent fans can be run when the house is closed up.

5 gift ideas for your aging father

Chances are, your dad is a baby boomer or even older. With people living longer these days and more and more boomers hitting retirement age, the infamous Father's Day blue striped tie probably isn't the right gift for your still quite active father.
Sixty is the new 40, and 80 might as well be the new 60. What better symbol of the active, aging father than President George H.W. Bush, who jumps out of airplanes in his mid-80s? Our aging fathers do not need more things.
Intangibles. That's the ticket. Father's Day gifts should be consumables, which can be eaten, used, spent, sipped or enjoyed. No dust catchers for later generations to sort, no hideous Necktie of the Month Club ties.
If Wally and the Beav had given traditional father Ward Clever gifts from the five categories we'll look at, he might have been disappointed. But your modern dad would love getting such gifts.
Golfers, father, son, senior, sports
The Sportsman
Fathers with established hobbies are usually inundated with hobby-related gifts. How many baseball hats or golf balls can one man have?
If your dad plays golf, what better gift than tee-times? Many public clubs offer gift certificates. Even if you are a duffer, why not line up a tee-time or two with dear old dad? If he belongs to a private club, consider purchasing cart rentals or other extras that don't come with membership.
For the avid spectator sportsman, check out special sports packages. Most cable companies offer individual games or game packages. If your dad can't afford such premium sports channels, wouldn't that be a great gift?
Attending a baseball game is a summer American tradition, and the new MLB ballparks all across the country offer up an afternoon of total fun. Buy Dad tickets and pick up the food tab. After all, nothing tastes more like summer than a ballpark hot dog covered with onions and relish.
But, what if your dad doesn't like sports?

Grand Canyon, senior tourist 640x360

Planes, trains and automobiles
Older adults have time to travel. Send your Dad on a trip to his hometown. Better yet, go with him, or send the grandchildren. You might be able to use your own hotel points for lodging and airline points for travel.
If your parent lives in a major city, a subway or bus card is a great gift.
With gas prices soaring this summer, a gift certificate for gasoline or an oil change tucked in a Father's Day card is a thoughtful, useful gift for the father who still takes a Sunday drive.
If life has been very good to you, why not send your dad on an extended tour to someplace he's always dreamed of seeing? Didn't he pack you and your siblings up in the Chevy and drive to the Grand Canyon? Smithsonian Journeys offers upscale tours all over the world.
Tours are rated by intensity and activity level, so be sure to choose one appropriate to his age and fitness.Revenge of the nerds
For the Dad who's been on a computer run since Univac, there are many intangible gift items. BlackBerry, iPhone and Android all offer gift certificates for apps.
Maybe Dad is dying to play retro "Frogger" or the hot new "Angry Birds," both available as apps. Of course, that's when he's not playing chess at the dining room table with his pal, that Walter Matthau-lookalike.
Make sure Dad has good anti-virus and security software. Check with your own computer experts for the right system. Enhance the gift by overseeing the installation and cleaning up Dad's system. Make it a malware free Father's Day!
Buy Dad an external hard drive and if he doesn't know how, back up his system for him and set up the software to do regular back-ups.

Family photos, senior, grandfather, pictures 640x360

Family guy
Digitize family pictures and put them on Dad's computer. Help him set up email and social networking with family members. If Dad is a collector of family treasures, sort through and label items with an archival-quality pen.
Give him a subscription to Ancestry.com, so he can research his predecessors and determine if Uncle Fred was indeed a fife player for the Yanks.
How about GO phone or Jitterbug phone minutes, so Dad can call those long-distance family members? And have your son, the engineering major, program the phone for Grandpa to make it super easy.
Time with Dad is precious, and someday you'll be very glad you did these things, and so will your children.
