Buying Groceries for Kids

Do you end up buying the same foods when you go grocery shopping?
Is your grocery cart full of healthy foods your kids won't eat orjunk food you are ashamed they do eat?

Reading Food Labels

As you learn about healthy food and avoiding junk food, you can really put those lessons to work at the grocery store when you buy groceries.
For example, comparing nutrition facts labels for Sunny D, a popular orange drink, would steer you towards buying the more nutritious SunnyD with Calcium or SunnyD Reduced Sugar.
Or you might skip this orange drink altogether and go with calcium-fortified orange juice if you had time to compare their food labels.
Unfortunately, parents are often in a rush at the grocery store and don't have time to compare food labels. Since that is the best way to find healthy foods and even more nutritious versions of the foods you are already buying, you should consider making an extra trip to the grocery store without your kids when you have extra time to simply create your family's grocery list.

Buying Groceries for Kids

In general, healthy foods on your grocery list for kids should include:
  • whole foods when possible, instead of processed snacks and foods that have a lot of extra sugar, fat (including trans fat),salt, and other things added to them and a lot of good things taken out, such as fiber.
And of course, you want to buy foods that your kids will actually eat.
Buying kid-friendly foods doesn't have to mean simply buying french fries and chicken nuggets, though.

Grocery List for Kids

Some of the groceries that you might look to include on your own grocery list when shopping for your kids can include:
  • Reduced fat (2%), low-fat (1%), or fat-free (skim) milk - without chocolate or strawberry flavoring, which can add extra sugar and calories to your child's milk.
  • Instant pudding (sugar-free and fat-free) that you make with low-fat milk
  • Fat-free or low-fat yogurt
  • Kraft Singles American Cheese 2% Milk Slices (25% calcium) or other fat-free or low-fat cheese - check the label to get the most calcium, though
  • Iron Kids Bread - a good option if your child is going to eat white bread since it has calcium, fiber, and extra iron.
  • Whole wheat bread and other whole grain products, such as whole wheat pasta, whole wheat sandwich buns and rolls, and brown rice
  • Fruits and Vegetables - choose a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season and that your kids enjoy, plus some pre-cut fruit and frozen vegetables that you can serve quickly.
  • 100% Fruit Juice - you can buy a limited amount of 100% fruit juice, but avoid buying soda and fruit drinks. Keep in mind that unless the drink you buy says 100% juice on the label, then it likely isn't 100% juice, which leaves out many popular brands, including most types of Capri Sun, Hi-C, Kool Aid, and Hawaiian Punch, etc.
  • Minute Maid Kids+ or Tropicana Healthy Kids orange juice - in addition to vitamin C, folate, and potassium, these brands of orange juice have more calcium, vitamin A, B1, D, and E, than many other brands.
  • Breakfast Cereal - avoid sweetened cereals and look for whole grain cereals with extra vitamins and minerals instead, such as Total, Multi-Grain Cheerios, Post Original Shredded Wheat Spoon Size, Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats, or Total Raisin Bran, etc.
  • Peter Pan Plus Peanut Butter - has more iron and many other vitamins and minerals than other brands of peanut butter
  • Hot dogs - buy low-fat varieties, such as Oscar Mayer Light Beef Franks or Hebrew National Kosher Reduced Fat Beef Franks, fat-free hot dogs, chicken or turkey hot dogs, or even vegetarian hot dogs. Keep in mind that hot dogs can be high in salt and nitrates, so you might not want to let your kids eat them on a regular basis.
  • Lean meats and poultry - including the leanest beef cuts, leanest pork choices, extra lean ground beef, skinless chicken parts, and boneless skinless chicken breasts and turkey cutlets.
  • Luncheon meats - lean turkey, roast beef, ham, or low-fat luncheon meats.
  • Canned light tuna fish, which is thought to have less mercury than albacore ('white') tuna. And remember because of current fish and mercury warnings, you should monitor and limit your younger child's fish consumption.
  • Oils and fats - canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, margarine, low-fat mayonnaise
  • Fat-free or low-fat salad dressings - which can also be used as a dip for fruits and vegetables.
  • Healthy Snacks - air-popped or light popcorn, Graham crackers, No-calorie drink mixes, seeds and nuts, applesauce, canned fruits in juice or water, raisins, pretzels, baked chips

Don't Buy Grocery List for Kids

Just as important as the groceries you buy may be the groceries that you leave out of your shopping cart.
In addition to fruit drinks and soda, when you are buying groceries, you should likely skip buying:
  • full-fat dairy products
  • bologna and salami, which have more fat than other lunch meats
  • processed meats with extra salt
  • shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish - which are fish that have high levels of mercury and should not be eaten by young children.
  • shortening, butter, or stick margarine, which can be high in saturated fats and/or trans fats.
  • foods with added sugars, which can be identified by looking on the ingredient list for sugar, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, molasses, etc.
  • snacks with a lot of calories from either sugar and/or fat, including potato chips, doughnuts, cookies, and candy.
Most importantly, don't end up buying groceries that resemble fast food at home, such as prepackaged pizza, french fries, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, corndogs, and soda, etc.

Chances are, your dad is a baby boomer or even older. With people living longer these days and more and more boomers hitting retirement age, the infamous Father's Day blue striped tie probably isn't the right gift for your still quite active father.
Sixty is the new 40, and 80 might as well be the new 60. What better symbol of the active, aging father than President George H.W. Bush, who jumps out of airplanes in his mid-80s? Our aging fathers do not need more things.
Intangibles. That's the ticket. Father's Day gifts should be consumables, which can be eaten, used, spent, sipped or enjoyed. No dust catchers for later generations to sort, no hideous Necktie of the Month Club ties.
If Wally and the Beav had given traditional father Ward Clever gifts from the five categories we'll look at, he might have been disappointed. But your modern dad would love getting such gifts.
Golfers, father, son, senior, sports
The Sportsman
Fathers with established hobbies are usually inundated with hobby-related gifts. How many baseball hats or golf balls can one man have?
If your dad plays golf, what better gift than tee-times? Many public clubs offer gift certificates. Even if you are a duffer, why not line up a tee-time or two with dear old dad? If he belongs to a private club, consider purchasing cart rentals or other extras that don't come with membership.
For the avid spectator sportsman, check out special sports packages. Most cable companies offer individual games or game packages. If your dad can't afford such premium sports channels, wouldn't that be a great gift?
Attending a baseball game is a summer American tradition, and the new MLB ballparks all across the country offer up an afternoon of total fun. Buy Dad tickets and pick up the food tab. After all, nothing tastes more like summer than a ballpark hot dog covered with onions and relish.
But, what if your dad doesn't like sports?

Grand Canyon, senior tourist 640x360

Planes, trains and automobiles
Older adults have time to travel. Send your Dad on a trip to his hometown. Better yet, go with him, or send the grandchildren. You might be able to use your own hotel points for lodging and airline points for travel.
If your parent lives in a major city, a subway or bus card is a great gift.
With gas prices soaring this summer, a gift certificate for gasoline or an oil change tucked in a Father's Day card is a thoughtful, useful gift for the father who still takes a Sunday drive.
If life has been very good to you, why not send your dad on an extended tour to someplace he's always dreamed of seeing? Didn't he pack you and your siblings up in the Chevy and drive to the Grand Canyon? Smithsonian Journeys offers upscale tours all over the world.
Tours are rated by intensity and activity level, so be sure to choose one appropriate to his age and fitness.Revenge of the nerds
For the Dad who's been on a computer run since Univac, there are many intangible gift items. BlackBerry, iPhone and Android all offer gift certificates for apps.
Maybe Dad is dying to play retro "Frogger" or the hot new "Angry Birds," both available as apps. Of course, that's when he's not playing chess at the dining room table with his pal, that Walter Matthau-lookalike.
Make sure Dad has good anti-virus and security software. Check with your own computer experts for the right system. Enhance the gift by overseeing the installation and cleaning up Dad's system. Make it a malware free Father's Day!
Buy Dad an external hard drive and if he doesn't know how, back up his system for him and set up the software to do regular back-ups.

Family photos, senior, grandfather, pictures 640x360

Family guy
Digitize family pictures and put them on Dad's computer. Help him set up email and social networking with family members. If Dad is a collector of family treasures, sort through and label items with an archival-quality pen.
Give him a subscription to Ancestry.com, so he can research his predecessors and determine if Uncle Fred was indeed a fife player for the Yanks.
How about GO phone or Jitterbug phone minutes, so Dad can call those long-distance family members? And have your son, the engineering major, program the phone for Grandpa to make it super easy.
Time with Dad is precious, and someday you'll be very glad you did these things, and so will your children.
